Runway success
In a joint project between University of the Arts London and Arts Aimhigher, four aspiring fashion designers from Croydon’s BRIT School showcased their work in a catwalk show at Tate Britain. Leading designer and University of the Arts London graduate Romero Bryan (who boasts Beyonce, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham and Usher as clients) acted as a mentor to the students during an intensive 10-week fashion design course.

Far and away
Having won a prestigious scholarship through the Dulwich and Peckham Rotary Club, Dulwich resident Christine Wright will spend three months at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok as part of The Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program. Meanwhile, local young people from the City of London Academy and Southwark Council’s junior streetleader scheme have been selected to travel across Europe as ambassadors in Capacity Global’s Just Cities project to share their ideas with politicians and policy makers.

A night at the museum
To celebrate Museums & Galleries Month, the Horniman Museum hosted sold-out torchlight tours. A highlight of the month was the announcement that the museum had attracted a record breaking 603,221 visitors over the past year, a 52 % increase from previous years.

Hello neighbour!
The Peabody Trust’s Stamford Street and Camberwell Green estates celebrated European Neighbours’ Day for the first time. Spanning 582 cities in 22 countries, the event aims to bring neighbours together and encourage community links. In addition to food stalls, a bouncy castle, face painting and sport coaching, there were activities with the Young Vic Theatre, London Fire Brigade and London Wildlife Trust. Resident artist Soheila Keyani – who has exhibited at the Barbican – ran an arts workshop.

BonkersFest! 2007 was a fabulous day attended by over 4,000 visitors. It opened with commediene and former psychiatric nurse Jo Brand setting off a banana-filled cannon, and ended with everyone – old and young – dancing on Camberwell Green to live music well into the night.

Tide charts
Tide is a new exhibition by Jo Lewis at the Sun and Doves. Her exquisite watercolours are created using the natural ebb and flow of the Thames, as the movement of water across the paper as it meets the paint leaves a unique trace. The show continues until 15 July.

Fly the flag
Entertainer Rolf Harris and Ghanaian textile artist Seiwa Cunningham visited the Horniman Museum to view artwork created by children from Kelvin Grove Primary School in Lewisham. The work was part of the Fante Flags exhibition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

Tea cosy
Dulwich residents Linda Barker and Jo Brand visited Leonard Cheshire’s Athol House to launch the charity’s Tea for Ability initiative, with tea-related fundraising events taking place until 10 June. Earl Grey fan Linda says, “Everybody enjoys a cup of tea and this is a chance to have a cuppa and make a difference.”

Test match
Jean-Sebastien Azais, chef sommelier at Beauberry House, took part at a blind tasting competition held by Berkmann Wines. Over 1,000 tasters were asked to identify three reds and three whites and Jean-Sebastien managed to win by correctly identify all six. His prize was a very rare double magnum Yalumba The Menzies Coonawarra – one of only a very few produced. Salut!

To the delight of an audience of 500 girls, staff and parents, Sydenham High School hosted an exclusive performance by acclaimed jazz pianist Jamie Cullum. Currently taking a year off to write new material, Jamie agreed to play the special one-off gig to help celebrate the launch of the school’s new state-of-the-art performing arts complex. Paul Atterbury and Rupert Maas, stars of the BBC’s
Antiques Roadshow, were on hand for the grand opening of Oakfield’s Upper School art room at a unique fundraising event at the school. The pair, who specialise in art and ceramics, offered their top tips, answered questions and then provided valuations. Guests who brought along their bric-a-brac not only received expert advice, they also enjoyed drinks, canapés and a raffle.
